Meet Holly: Our Energetic Weimaraner Puppy’s Journey from Winter Woes to Off-Leash Wins
Internet, allow us to introduce you to Holly, our spirited, lovable, and incredibly intelligent 7-month-old Weimaraner. If you’ve had the pleasure (and challenge) of sharing your life with this distinctive breed, you’ll immediately recognize the blend of adjectives – rambunctious, deeply affectionate, undeniably smart, and sometimes, wonderfully wild – that perfectly describe her. Weimaraners are known for their boundless energy, keen minds, and an unwavering devotion to their families, all traits Holly embodies to the fullest.
I’ve certainly touched upon her antics here and there, often in the context of my perpetually interrupted sleep thanks to her enthusiastic 6 AM wake-up calls. But for those who don’t follow my daily updates on Instagram, you might not have seen a proper introduction to this furry whirlwind. It’s a bittersweet process, as I’ve yet to update my About page to include her – it’s still incredibly difficult to remove the cherished memories of our sweet Ginger, who held such a special place in our hearts for many years.

Embracing Weimaraner Puppyhood: A Rude Awakening in the New York Winter
To simply state that Holly is “a handful” would be a colossal understatement of the year. Our last experience with puppyhood was a distant memory, over eleven years ago, and diving back into it with a Weimaraner has been a profound reawakening. While any new puppy brings its unique set of challenges, navigating the boisterous energy of a Weimaraner in the harsh grip of a New York winter amplified every single one of them exponentially.
Our previous journey through this puppy stage was a stark contrast. We resided in the sunny paradise of Palm Beach, Florida, where the outdoors was always accessible. Long walks, visits to the dog park, or even late-night ball-throwing sessions in our boat storage lot (a true story – Ginger adored chasing balls under the moonlight before bed) were all done in the comfort of flip-flops. The ease of outdoor access made house-training and energy management significantly simpler.
Fast forward to this past December through March, and my reality was a world away. House-training Holly meant bundling up every 1-2 hours: wrestling into a heavy down coat, snow boots, gloves, and a hat, all while grabbing a flashlight and leashing up an eager puppy. The constant cycle of gearing up, braving the frigid temperatures, and then stripping off layers to clean muddy paws and wet floors, all knowing I’d have to repeat the entire ordeal shortly, pushed me to the brink of losing my mind on a daily basis. It was undeniably, unequivocally, rough. The sheer physical and mental exhaustion of winter puppy training for such an active breed cannot be overstated.

A Serendipitous Arrival: Holly Joins Our Family
Holly’s arrival in our lives at the end of December felt wonderfully serendipitous. We hadn’t planned on welcoming a new puppy so soon after the heartbreaking loss of Ginger, and certainly not before we had the opportunity to fence in our yard. However, as fate would have it, a series of circumstances aligned perfectly. On December 19th, I found myself driving home from Rhode Island, with a tiny, 13-week-old bundle of joy nestled in her crate on the backseat. She was snuggled against a fluffy white bear that was practically bigger than her, whimpering softly now and then throughout the three-hour journey home. That day marked the official beginning of our new chapter with Holly.
And so, with her arrival, began the arduous countdown to spring. The anticipation was palpable, a desperate yearning for the day I could simply open the sliding back door and let her out into a secure, fenced backyard. This dream was a stark contrast to the daily production of suiting up for the elements, standing shivering in the cold while Holly, instead of “doing her business,” meticulously inspected every stick in sight. Then, the whole ritual of stripping off layers, cleaning wet and muddy paw prints off our floors, only to repeat the entire process approximately every hour and a half to prevent accidents on our many downstairs area rugs. (A mental note I’ve firmly committed to for any potential “next puppy”: remove all rugs!).
Battling the Elements: The Fence Project and Seasonal Affective Disorder
New York, however, seemed to have other plans, opting for three major snowstorms in March instead of ushering in the gentle warmth of spring. Each fresh snowfall felt like a cruel joke, pushing the dream of a completed fence further and further away. I won’t sugarcoat it – during those weeks, I frequently teetered between full-blown emotional breakdowns and moments of pure, unadulterated frustration directed at anyone within earshot. As someone who battles (self-diagnosed) seasonal affective disorder, the persistent winter gloom coupled with the demands of an energetic puppy truly put my sanity to the ultimate test.

But, we persevered. In the frigid temperatures of late March, with stubborn patches of snow still clinging to the ground, my husband Ulysses, my brother, and I dedicated a long weekend to the monumental task of erecting that fence. We somehow managed to complete the project, narrowly escaping frostbite in the process. The relief and joy were immense. Finally, a secure space for Holly to explore freely!
Here’s a glimpse into what Holly thinks of her newly fenced backyard now – it’s safe to say she approves wholeheartedly:
Unleashing Potential: Off-Leash Training and the Power of Positive Reinforcement
With the newfound security and freedom provided by the fenced backyard came an incredible opportunity: the chance to truly dive into off-leash training. For a breed as active and intelligent as a Weimaraner, off-leash skills are not just a convenience; they’re essential for their mental stimulation, physical well-being, and overall safety. This type of training fosters a deeper bond and allows them to expend their energy in a more natural way, exploring and running freely within safe boundaries.
Now, I won’t pretend to take any credit for the actual training methodology. When it comes to dog training, my patience level is often comparable to that of a one-year-old. That dedication and consistent effort are entirely Ulysses’s domain. He possesses the calm demeanor and strategic approach necessary to guide Holly through her lessons. My crucial role, however, is to provide the ultimate incentive: irresistible treats!

Prioritizing Pet Nutrition: A Journey to Quality Ingredients
Looking back at our first dog, Ginger, I can attribute some of my early naiveté to being just 25 years old. It took me a significant amount of time to truly appreciate, or even seriously consider, the crucial importance of high-quality food and treats for our dog. For the first couple of years, we simply continued feeding Ginger what her breeder had recommended, without much thought beyond that. Treats were chosen based on what looked appealing at the pet store or what happened to be on sale at the moment. It was a simple, perhaps overly simplistic, approach to her nutrition.
It wasn’t until my own “food awakening” a few years later – a personal journey towards understanding and prioritizing wholesome, clean ingredients in my own diet – that I began to extend that same critical scrutiny to Ginger’s nutrition. This sparked a deep dive into researching better options for her. My exploration started with grain-free alternatives, then progressed to investigating and experimenting with raw dog food. Ultimately, I found a happy medium that balanced what worked best for our lifestyle and budget with ensuring she received the highest quality nutrition possible. This journey taught me invaluable lessons about canine dietary needs and the profound impact of proper nutrition on a dog’s overall health and vitality.
The Right Start with Holly: Wellness CORE RawRev Treats
This time around with Holly, I came into puppyhood much better prepared and equipped with that accumulated knowledge. The landscape of pet nutrition has also dramatically evolved in the last decade. The availability and popularity of high-quality, limited-ingredient dog food and treats have skyrocketed, which is a fantastic bonus from a consumer standpoint. It means more options for pet parents who are committed to providing the best for their furry companions.
Wellness Pet Food was a brand I already trusted and stocked in our “treat closet.” Their CORE RawRev 100% Freeze-Dried treats stood out for several key reasons. Firstly, their bite-sized pieces are perfectly suited as high-value training incentives, making them ideal for motivating Holly during off-leash training sessions. More importantly, their ingredient list is refreshingly simple and clean: just pure meat. A simple, clean ingredient list is a top priority for my own food choices, and I maintain that same rigorous standard for my dog’s diet. When I noticed these very same treats stocked in the treat jar at our vet’s office during Holly’s first visit, it solidified my confidence that I had made an excellent choice. It felt like a professional endorsement of a brand I already respected.

As a brand, Wellness Pet Food is deeply committed to crafting food that is not only profoundly nourishing but also contributes positively to your pet’s overall well-being and, crucially, tastes absolutely delicious. For Holly, that last part – the taste – is pretty much her sole concern, and she certainly gives Wellness CORE RawRev her enthusiastic stamp of approval! However, for me, the discerning pet parent, it’s all about the first part: the nutritional value and its contribution to her long-term health and vitality. Knowing I’m providing her with ingredients that support her energetic lifestyle and growing body brings immense peace of mind.
Thanks to Ulysses’s consistent patience and expertise, Holly’s off-leash skills are progressing wonderfully. And thanks to the undeniable deliciousness and motivational power of Wellness CORE RawRev 100% Freeze-Dried treats, Holly genuinely enjoys every moment of her training. These treats make learning a positive and rewarding experience, solidifying her bond with Ulysses and building crucial skills that will serve her well throughout her life. It’s a rewarding journey watching our spirited Weimaraner puppy grow into a well-trained, happy, and healthy companion, ready to take on the world one delicious treat at a time!
