Cherry Oat Waffles: A Deliciously Healthy Breakfast
Sometimes, as I reflect on the things that excite me these days, I can’t help but feel a little… well, not young.
A “5/$20 underwear sale”… yes, that sign at Victoria’s Secret definitely caught my eye.
Heating oil below $2/gallon? I immediately ordered a tank refill, even though it’s August, we have a wood-burning stove, and barely use oil anymore. The thought of paying even a few cents more per gallon when winter approaches apparently activates my inner frugal dad.
Then there’s the fact that Ulysses is working overnights this weekend, and I have no plans other than to spend the evenings on the couch, watching Parenthood (season 5) with a container of gelato I’m already anticipating buying for the occasion.
I suppose this is what being 33 is like.

But what *doesn’t* make me feel my age, and still excites me?
Cherry waffles. More specifically, waffles with a cherry pie-like topping.
These are something that even my 20-year-old self would have loved, and I’d bet my bottom dollar that my 50-year-old self will be just as excited to dig into these beauties any morning of the week. They’re a breakfast win, through and through.

I have a serious soft spot for cherry pie. It’s my absolute favorite kind of fruit pie. But not just any cherry pie; I’m talking specifically tart cherry pie (often called sour cherry pie). While I will happily enjoy a sour cherry crisp, pie holds my heart.
Yep, those little wonders with all the anti-inflammatory and sleep benefits I’ve mentioned in past posts are made with the same cherries! The lip-puckering sour cherries combined with a buttery, flaky crust… it’s pure bliss.
It’s probably a top contender for the dessert portion of my last meal, if I had to choose. One issue with store-bought cherry pies is the amount of sugar often added to the filling. I want to savor that tartness!

These cherry oat waffles are my easy, “I don’t really want to make a whole pie from scratch” solution to satisfy my craving for a less-sugary tart cherry pie filling.
Similar to my base oatmeal waffle recipe, these cherry waffles are made with oat flour. This makes them gluten-free. And with absolutely no added sweeteners in the filling, that distinctive, lip-puckering tart cherry goodness shines through.
Best part? They’re waffles, not a full-blown pie, so you can totally justify eating this for breakfast. Win-win!
